Default Engine Bay paint

Fairly new member and I have done a little bit of searching here for some of my answers, but.... Two years ago I purchased a 1965 corvette (duh!) convertible from my best friend. It has sat in the garage I had to build for it since then. Prior to my aquisition, it sat in his semi-open garage for 10+ years, and no, he didn't drive it or start it during that time. It's time for me to start work on it. The engine was rebuilt in 1975 and has maybe 10-15k miles on it since the rebuild, so it should still be good to go. I am pulling it and the tranny as a winter project. I'm going to have a local (recommended) shop totally strip and clean the engine and install new gaskets and give it a thorough inspection. If all looks good, they quoted me about $500 which I think is ok. Cheap insurance I think. I have not checked into a tranny rebuild yet (4-speed). While the engine is out, I figure now is the time to clean and repaint the engine bay as much as I can, replacing things that need replacing etc. Is semi-gloss black the correct color, and if so, is there a specific brand I should go to , or steer clear from? No, this will not be an NCRS car, however, I would like it to at least look like it's supposed to in those areas that haven't been modified. Sorry for the lengthy post. I appreciate your input. Larry

I appreciate the advice from "Senior" members of the forum. I'm guessing all three suggestions are extremely close in appearance, and as I mentioned, this won't be an NCRS car. Paint can't be that expensive. I may buy small quantities of all three, paint 'something' and see what they look like and go from there. Thanks guys. I'm sure I'll have many more questions as I get going. Side note: I last rode in this car when I was about 19 yrs old. I'm hitting 55 soon. It hasn't sat the intervening 36 years, just didn't have an opportunity to ride in it. Thanks again fellows.

When I did an engine swap in my '66 I used POR 15 for all the frame members. Wire brush, a little kerosene and pressure washed first the best as possible and then this stuff. http://www.eastwood.com/rust-solutio...FcZM4AodMC1UiQ

did my engine bay a while back I sure found myself wishing it was a body off restoration at that stage very difficult to get perfect results unless every thing was completely stripped off/ for cleaner make sure there is no grease think i used simple green as far as using krylon I did and was not happy with the result the john deer may be better just my take enjoy your restoration /build

I would love to a frame off resto.... my fear is by the time I get that deep into it and start running out of $$, I may be 65 before I drive it! Due to it's present condition, the car needs brakes, and everything associated with brakes. I will upgrade those components. Once the engine is back in, new brakes, tires, hoses, then it's time to start this thing and go for a long awaited drive. If I save my $$ and take the body off as much as I would love too, I may not get done in time to enjoy it! Thanks again guys for the paint info.

Hi Larry,
I would make doubly sure your $500 engine job does not destroy your engine pad numbers. Make a clear point of telling your shop not to touch your pad.
NCRS is not all about show cars. You would benefit greatly by having your car judged locally if possible.

Thanks Syd. I know during the 1975 rebuild they left the pad alone and didn't need to deck the block. My plan now is a complete disassemble, inspection and replace anything not up to speck that doesn't involve machining then reassemble. I appreciate the advice. As this proceeds in a couple of months I'm sure I'll be flooding the forum with many more questions. Thanks again everyone.

I like your thinking, get it running and safe, enjoy the ride.

Tin foil works well for masking off odd stuff.

I like the Eastwood product--it goes on with a nice thin coat.
