I have three distributors for my car that are in pieces. The one that I believe is correct has 536 CCW stamped on the cam housing. There is no other identification on the distributors that I can see. The car is a 1965 w/327-365HP engine. Two of the housings have holes at the back of the tack drive, the other has no hole. Could someone help me in gathering the correct pieces, so I can send it out for rebuilding. It would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
All '62-'74 Corvette distributors are the same, except for the tuning components; what do you have and what are you missing? LICS, Paragon, and others have most of the detail parts. With a 327/365hp, you'll need a vacuum advance unit stamped "B28".
The two with a hole in the end of the tach drive cavity are from C3's; they'll work fine, but will get a minor deduction in judging for the hole - a little JB Weld and black paint will cure that.
Coincidently, I've been messing with my -069 distributor for the last few weeks and have learned a few things in the process!
As John said, you need a "B28" vacuum advance can and here are a few numbers to help you.
GM 88924985 Delco 1312C Echlin VC-1810 Wells DV 1810 Niehoff DR 305
Borg V329 Standard VC 177
You can check these with a vacuum gun. Movement should start at about 4"Hg and be all in at 8".
My distributor would not reach 28* of mechanical advance, because someone had changed the shaft to one with a low-horse autocam shape.
What's an autocam? That's the football shaped gizmo on the shaft top.
Autocams, I discovered, come in different shapes depending on the advance curve. Who knew??
So if you would post a picture of your 3 shafts & autocams, someone here could tell you which is the "high horsepower" shape you want to use.
John/Mike: Thanks for the information. I have two of the distributors with me at work and am in search of the third that is somewhere in my attic. I will have someone take a picture of the two autocam assemblies today and I will post these pictures. The autocams are definately different I have owned this car since 1971, and haven't driven it for 35 years. I thought that I would pick an easy project (the distributor) to get started on in hope of again starting this car this year.
The marking on the first autocam is 536CCW; the vacuum advance is MS236-16
The marking on the second autocam is 726CCW; the vacuum advance is MS328-24
