Default Scams

What can we do about scammers?

Is there anywhere to report them?

I've received this via email.

The asking price is $ 12,900. It's a 1966 Chevrolet Corvette 427/425hp Convertible. It has 33,441 miles. The car is located in Saint Paul, MN.

Factory loaded with: Leather interior, Power Windows (A31), Headrests (A82), Power Brakes (J50), 4-speed manual transmission, Side mount exhaust (N14), Teakwood Steering Wheel (N32), telescopic Steering Column (N36), Power Steering (N40), Knock-Off Wheels (P48), and a Am-Fm Radio (U69).Beautiful Rally Red (974) exterior with a Red (408) leather interior. Very nice body with tight fits, and nice lines. Under the hood is a Numbers Matching 427ci/425hp engine with a 4-spd manual transmission.

Excellent Condition! No scratches or dents. The engine runs like a top. Clean history. Never been wrecked or involved in any kind of accident. It runs and drives very good, needs nothing! No smoker. It comes with a clear and clean title in hand, bill of sale signed by him and notarized and all the paper work.

We want to sell it because we are in desperate need of cash due to my husband several uninspired decisions while gambling, so we end up with a lot of debts and we are about to lose our business as well. We are also about to change our house for a cheaper one in AL and try to sell more other things.

We had a serious buyer before and we lost about 2 weeks waiting for him but we just find out that his loan wasn't approved.

We are currently signed up for a protection program offered by Google Checkout and we would like to close the deal through them. If you are not aware of this program you should know that it will allow you to test drive and inspect the car before paying us. In this way you're not buying something sight unseen. You will have a 5-day inspection period to decide whether you want to keep the car or not before they release the funds to us.

If we reach an agreement, we are willing to take care of the shipping because the fee was already paid by us for the buyer that I told you about. The shipping company will not refund us in full but offered to ship the car anywhere within continental US, so it is at their warehouse and it's ready to be shipped anytime. It will be a big advantage for you if you decide to move the car to your location.

Looking forward for your reply if you are interested in the car and I will send you more details about the deal or car as well. Also I only attached one photo. Please let me know if you need some more.

Thanks
Jennifer Tilley

I'd prefer to notify the authorities to set up a sting, have them arrested then deported.

...but that's just me.

There are not enough hours in the day or man power to catch scammers. They rent puter space, go to any possible place for free computers and use any kind of account they can. Googles Gmail is always a catch. Western Union works for them because all you need is a pin # and the info you give them. Always ask yourself, dont these people selling a 70k car have a friend, cousin, brother or ex wife that will give them 10k for it. Ifs its to good to be true, it is. The easiest way to make sure its real is to go see it.

Funny "she" knows all the option codes and desired buzzwords like "numbers matching" but has no clue about price! If they need money that bad, why not ask $45,000?

Somebody tell them you're IN St. Paul, you can hand them $13k cash, but you want to see the car right now before you hand the money over.

We have a current affairs show here in Aus. that has had a few sting stories - great viewing.

They usually set up those that have already stung our citizens.

The latest were the Nigerian date site scammers, they prey on the lonely hearts with fake photos and some story as to why they require money, serving in the US army abroad and need $ for this and that, etc. sickening really. Always great to see them get caught, they don't get prison time but it's great to see them get cuffed and sent back to Nigeria. These particular ones were working out of Malaysia.

Tell them you have a friend near St. Paul and he wants to inspect it for you. If they say OK, PM me. And no, I'm not in the market for another BB mid-year.

I think they know the price but want to nab a lot of suckers.

She/he has obviously taken all the info from another ad.

I've been stringing her/him along and asking if I can take it for a test drive - it's in a container and ready to ship so I can't inspect it.

The latest email I've asked for container no. and address.

I have spare time so may as well waste theirs.

I don't know about you guys, but anymore when posting or responding to ads, just put your phone # on stuff and don't respond to emails. Think about it...if you really want to buy/sell something, you would call. So would everyone else.

I live in Aus. so I always email first for more photos, info, etc. If all is good then I'll have it inspected, I'll get the inspector to call them.

Never buy sight unseen.

If you are really interested in selling or buying PICK UP A PHONE AND DIAL
2 reasons one you can read people by their voice and know you are not trading email with some 14 year old kid

True, but when you are responding to ads from Australia I guess it matters since a 2 minute call is a small fortune. I guess if your in the American car market just get a good long distance plan.

However, responding to the OP post, since you are in Australia, I don't think you are going to get much done in the way of busting scammers either. Good luck getting the FBI to give a flying fart or getting an international lawyer to either unless you have a big pocket book.

It still affects US citizens since the ads are on US car sales sites and targeted to those in the US primarily.

Don't you guys have some organisation that tries to stamp out fraud? I guess it only becomes fraud after the crime is committed which is a damn shame.

It is a shame, and I wish they would rot in jail. But they will get theirs someday.
