Default What would you do?

My 4 spd tranny is spitting back 3rd gear. It is not the shifter So we think it is synchros. Haven't been able to get the speedo gear to work either. There may be more issues when we ope it p.

It is the original tranny. The shop offered to put in a rebuilt tranny in for 1200$ and I store my original for some other day that may never come.

Is the price reasonable vs a rebuild of my own trans? FYI the car is already torn apart so slipping either one back in is no big deal.

$1200 seems high to me....I think the original can be done for less.

Default tranny

Rebuild the original trans and put it back in. Its cheaper than $1200 and you will retain value on the car.

Or you can store the original and put that $1200 towards a new 5 speed to make it more driveable at highway speed. Just a suggestion.

Sounds like the synchro unit not just the synchronizer (ring) is gone. Buy a master rebuild kit with the new unit and invest in a new gear (cheap). You can probably get the parts for under $500 from D & L Transmission. Ask for torq-loc sliders. You can do it yourself.

$1,200 is way too high.

Why do you all say too high and then quote the cost of a rebuild kit?

As I understand the op price includes R&R.

1st choice for me would be have the original rebuilt. Parts labor and R&R would be about the same $1200

can't answer for the cost of the R&R but I had my original tranny from my '65 rebuilt back in '06 or '07. complete rebuild was $700 and that included bushing the case were the shaft comes out and the older Muncies tended to get that hole enlarged.
I pulled the tranny out and reinstalled it myself so the $700 was just the work on the tranny.
a GREAT Muncie guy in PA did mine - Ed Hartnett.

I would not think that is bad for removal, rebuild and re-instalation. Might be a touch high for a nice rebuilt unit. Surely can be done for less than $500 if you want to DIY. I don't think I had much more in my rebuild and I bought all new gears, torque lock sliders, bearing, gaskets. But if I had to do it again I may shelf it and buy a 5 speed.

If you're going to drive it, save the four speed and install a five speed.

Last year, I pulled the Muncie 4 speed out of my 56 Chevy. It was a 1967 wide ratio model.

Ordered the "super duper" kit from these folks.. Was about $250. as I recall. Then bought 2 "torq-loc" sliders.

Total bill with shipping was about $350. +/-

A buddy of mine and myself rebuilt it in his garage. Cost? Dinner for him and his wife.

Chuck
