What factory gear ratio's were offered in 64?
Looking on line one source says 3.70, another says 3.31, another offered 3.08 as an optional gear. What was the standard offering with the powerglide? The 4 speed? The info on the net leads to more confusion...

with a powerglide you got a 3.08 and a 4 speed I think 3.36 was standard. while the 3.08,3.73, 4.11, and 4.56 optional. for a 4 speed

With Powerglide (only available with the 250 and 300hp engines), 3.36 was standard, 3.08 was optional (many published charts are incorrect).
3 & 4-speeds with 250 and 300hp engines had 3.36 standard, 3.08 was optional.
With the 365 and 375hp engines, 3.70 was standard with 4-speeds, with 3.08 to 4.56 optional (3.08, 3.36, 3.55, 4.11, 4.56). Those two engines were also available with 3-speeds, although few were sold; with that combination, 3.36 was the only axle available.

Depends on the engine.

The ratio code and assembly date are stamped on the bottom flange of the diff housing, between the spring retainer plate and the camber strut rod bracket; you'll need to do some cleaning in order to see it.

For 64 model year, a 3.36 ratio had the codes CA (open ) & CB (Posi)stamped on the lower edge of the carrier.
CC-3.55 Posi 4 Speed
CD-3.70 Posi 4 Speed
CE- 4.11 " " "
CF- 4.56 " " "
CJ- 3.08 " " "
CX- 3.70 Open 4 Speed
CZ- 3.08 Open - 4 Speed
CC-3.55 Posi 4 Speed
CD-3.70 Posi 4 Speed
CE- 4.11 " " "
CF- 4.56 " " "
CJ- 3.08 " " "
CX- 3.70 Open 4 Speed

Mine says "CA6 15 64" so 3.36 open eh? I assume 15 64 is the date. According to the vin my car was built on June 19th. Would this code work with that assembly date?

thanks! that would seem about correct for my build date, will a posi bolt in to this rear oe would i need a new housing. I read in another thread the 63-64 rears wen't as strong as the 65-79 units. is that correct?

I believe you would need a Posi Carrier unit to convert to posi. I dont know if the later units are compatible to the early units. Gary Ramalldi (sp) would be the person who would know as he has a reputation for building some very stout units.
