If your saying you want to replace the rubber seal/gasket for the vent window...yes, the assembly should come out of the door because the individual vent window needs to come out of the vent frame. It been 26 years since I replace my seals. I think they fit into a tight channel with some adhesive. Someone else here on the CF can ad to this point. Dennis

Yes the Vent does have to come out if you want to do it right...

I used SS staples on mine when i redid my car...take your time when you redo these.

I cut the old staples off, cleaned and polished the Stainless, lined up the new wipes and held in place with some clamps, drilled through old "staple" holes from the backside and put in new staples, they hard to bend but are not impossible...

Make sure you bend them tight to the trim>>>

IIRC they came with either rivets or staples.

The answer to your question - 'rivets or staples'..................

Would then be a resounding - yes!

Mine were riveted and I found the rivets quite easy to deal with.

Interestingly enough when my '66 convertible as disassembled, I had one side with rivets....the other with staples. Both factory applications. I chose to rivet the window wipes.....much easier to work with.
