Default 1964 Corvette Build Thread

Hey, new to the forum, my name is Louis, I am 23 and live in the bay area.(ca)

Bought this car of my dad about 3 months ago and have been working on it ever since. He had it for about 25 years but pretty much just let it sit.

It’s a 1964 corvette(numbers matching car) 327-300hp 4 speed Car

Been doing a lot of research on here and buying of parts. So I thought it would be a good idea to start a build thread, I know they have given me a few ideas/pointers.

Well on to the build.

Previous owner did a few modifications to the body as you can see flared the fenders out front/back (tires are 255s and don’t stick out of the fenders), 67 hood, 3 tail lights and removed the side vents(I will be putting those back on)

I have done a few things already, some of which I’m going to be redoing again soon.

Painting all the parts

PICS OF CURRENT STATE-

Goals for the Car-
383 Stoker motor between 400-450hp (numbers matching car, but too much body modification for that to really matter anymore, Imo) So I figure might as well build myself a motor I want instead of trying and keep it stock. (or possibly might build the 327 up and keep it so I can say its matching numbers…Not sure quit yet)

Paint- Silver/gun metal with 427 raised hood part painted black- Also going to put the side vents back on it.

Interior- New Seats(these will be for sale), New stereo system(amp, speakers, sub etc) New Carpet, New gauges, new steering wheel, etc

Suspension- (Done) New Bjs/tie rods, Energy suspension bushings, Front/rear spraco sway bars(rear never had one) Rebuilt drive shafts/half shafts, New front springs, New Steering box, Bilstien sport shocks. Everything is painted/powder coated (I’ll get some pics of it up on a hoist soon)

-Only mod left on the suspension is prob a mono spring or a 7 leaf spring not sure yet, but might does not sit evenly.
First thing I did was completely rebuild the suspension/brakes.

My Next project is the interior-
I am going to use white gauge faces or silver not sure yet-

Also going to do the 1817 upgrade… Sorry to anyone else that wanted to do this mod, they are no longer selling these bulbs and I bought the last 16 of them.

Stereo Is pretty simple.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1963-1967-Ra...#ht_2013wt_901

Going to use that deck with a some 6 ½ kicker ks speakers in some custom pods In the front and kicker ks 6x9s in the rear with 1-2 kicker cvr 10s.

Carpet kit already have from my dad.

COUPLE QUESTIONS- I do have for the interior??? Before I start it.

I want an aftermarket leather steering wheel, I guess 15” (I don’t have power steering) I read the 14” is to small and blocks the gauges and the 16” is just to big Imo. So which ones do you guys recommend.

Second Has any one ever tried these seats in a c2- I know c3-c6 guys have and love them but never seen them in a c2. They are the Yonaka racing seats. ( I don’t like the ones in the car now really)
http://www.yonaka.com/Yonaka_Ronin_S..._p/ymrs002.htm

They are the same size of a c3-c4 seat roughly.

Last but not least, If you have any question on what im doing please ask, or think there is a better way for me to do it please post im always open for help.

Welcome aboard and a great car.

I would check out Procar Seats. They make a nice seat and they look better IMHO then Race Seats. I believe they will work with the stock sliders.

I tried a 14" wheel in my 65 (non PS). Still hit my legs just further down so no help. Also blocked the gauges. Figured a 15" wouldn't help much either so I put the 16" back on a just got used to it.

I may do a tilt Ididit and 14" if I do PS add.

I think your car is great. Many vettes back in the sixties had those body mods but you don't see them much any more. There are lots of stock restored ones today. To me its cool to see ones like yours come out of the past. I got a 383 in mine and love it and so do a few others on this board although we are a minority. Fix it up the way you like it and drive it and show it off, looks like a great start.

Welcome and the car looks great at this point. Keep the mods except reinstall the side vents, put bumpers on the front. Lower the car too take advantage of the flares. The tires and wheels make a perfect statement. Keep up the good work. Dennis

I would do a different motor as long as you keep the original 327 stored away somewhere

I like it the way it is. Lower it a bit, and run it!

Welcome. Good luck with the car. It looks great as it stands now. I agree with the lowering, but you have a great base to start with.

Wow, you are younger than me and I have a 64 300hp also. You might also consider a 67 clone, by putting the gills in the side instead of the horizontal coves.

I agree that lowering the car should be on the list, it will give it a tuff look. Is that lacquer paint?

EC Products use to offer a 63/64 "race car" grill. Basically it was a 63/64 grill, without the cutouts for the bumper brackets.

I can't wait to see more- looks like you've got a nice complete setup to build in. "When I was your age" (10 years ago) I was just finishing my '69 resurrection, and thought I was lucky to have one as old as that. You must be all grins!

P.S. my vote goes for the stock side louvers on any year, but I recognize many here love the '67's best.

New heads, cam, intake and EFI would be a reasonable alternative to a new motor. You can easily get another 50hp - 100hp. I would also suggest a complete disc brake conversion along with the other mods you listed.

When you put the side louvers in, are you going for stock or just want something to break up the flat area?

You might look behind and see if they just filled them with bondo and then painted. If so, you can dig it out without too much issue and have the stock ones.

Some ideas:

Grand Sport Style

1968-69 style, inside out

And the ones most put in - 1967.

63/64 grills didn't have the cutout for bumper brackets

Couple photo chops

..... On the lowering.(that is technically lowered)

I cut the front springs a 3/4 of a spring and the rear has lowering springs...I think its from the fenders being so big.

Im going to take the rear spring back off have it re arched and then cut the front springs another 1/4-1/2 inch....Might switch to that mono spring in the front not sure yet.

Any ideas on how to lower it more, or just keep cutting the springs etc.

The vents
-the vents are still there, you can see them on the inside of the engine bay, i think they are just glassed over.

I kinda like the ones posted above(kinda a kewl idea)

My goal for this vette is to make its have some modern touches with still keeping it a classic car, But i want it also to be different that all the other vettes

Yea disc brakes will be down down down the road...

Yea i have tossed around the idea of alluminum heads, cam, etc but alot of stuff i read is its not the best to build the 327s, easy to get much more power out a 383 then 327. Well see I would not mind doing that, but i really want some hp under the hood .

My truck is a fast as this thing right now lol.

I sell bikes with a small block 427 in them. Dart builds them and they're rated at 575 HP. We also have 400 inch Dart built engines at 525 HP, both of these engines are carbed. Either of these would be nice in your vette. I have a 383 in my vette because it was not to expensive and an easy swap but if I was to do it over again I would put an LS series motor in it.

Amen on the LS. I have a ZZ1 with efi that I have to many dollars in. To sell now at bargain basement prices would be stupid. Just bad timing on my part.
