I suggest you start from scratch and put #1 to TDC compression stroke and locate the wires per the diagram. Although it is true as long as you keep the firing order correct you can put #1 anywhere and it can be timed and run fine, look at the wire locations in the picture. #1 in this position keeps the wires fairly direct to the appropriate cylinder and the wires as short as possible. If you put #1 in other locations, other than 1 spot farther around in the firing order, you are likely to have a rat's nest of crossing wires. JMHO.

any help would be great
If you want the tach drive coupling pointing in the right direction to match the firewall cable hole and the vacuum advance can centered in its opening in the top ignition shield without hitting either the #8 intake runner or the plug wire support, the distributor needs to be oriented as shown in the photo below. I'm not familiar with MSD distributors vs. Delco, but the photo also shows the correct wire indexing in the cap.

When #1 comes up on compression stroke you won't be able to hold the air back with your thumb. Stop there. Helper is done now. Remove your distributor cap and note where the rotor is pointing and which corresponding post on your distributor at which it points. That is the post and wire for #1 cylinder. You may want to or have to clock your distributor again so it more closely aligns with your needs. If you got the MSD with the tach drive this will be very important in order to connect your tach cable. You have to start here in order for the rest to fall more closely in place. One additional thought. How did you deal with power to the 6al box AND how did you deal with the ballast resistor on your firewall?

Here's mine. #1 has the long piece of masking tape on the wire.

This was a great help for me. I had a buddy over tonight and found tdc on the #1 cylinder with the thumb technique and actually had to take out the distributor and re-adjust to have rotor pointing to #1.
Now have the car running so thanks everyone for your help.
As far as power for the 6al I soldered and heat scrunk #12 wires and ran across from the drivers side fender and I bypassed the ballast resistor

Well almost ready to go. I just got the car to a point where I could feather the gas and keep it runiing. It does sound smooth though. I also installed an original intake, changed to original pcv system , and fuel line all at once so it was good to hear the car come alive and not have coolant leaks or vacumm leaks.

Warren

thanks again everyone!
