I've seen a lot of people compliment other people's cars by saying "nice stance." What does this mean? Is it subjective? Is there a factory standard stance that people are looking for? Any chance some of y'all can show some pictures of C2s with/without said stance for comparison?
stance is usually synonymous with rake, that is the front being lower than the rear at a downward angle with the ground, and there is no standard; it's like beauty, it's in the eye of the beholder.. if you look at ST-12, the C1 has a built-in stance.
however stance could mean the car is setting high front and back like a drag car, or lowered like a lowrider.
to me, a mid year or C1 with good stance is sitting level, front to rear, and side to side. Mid years especially can get out of whack, with a jacked up or droopy rear end. They should sit level to look best to my eye. And, they can have one side sag. If you sit behind it and see that the rear bumpers are level and equal amounts of rear spring and suspension are showing out at the wheels, with wheels in a slight negative camber you know that car has a great stance.
Most the time I see "nice stance" it seems like they are referring to a car that has had suspension and/or wheels that have been changed and are referring to the car sitting a bit different than "normal" (usually lower) but looking good.
It's definitely subjective.

Reason: spelling

Lou is spot on. Stance is subjective to both a show Judge, a spectator or owner. Below is a link to last year 2011 GoodGuy's Terrific Twelve class winners. As you may see, some of these cars can very their stance while others have it built in. If you were to look up on Goodyguy's site the judging criteria for each class, you will see some classes have stance listed as a judged criteria an sometimes you can get stance wrong for the type car you have too.
On Pro Touring Forum my 64 is considered to have a good stance/rake not usually seen in a Midyear Corvette. For most owners of stock Midyear Corvettes, it wrong/inappropriate, but in the Grand Sport/Vintage racing world it's not as in effort to help keep front end from lifting nose was/is slanted down on some.
In my case, I used tire diamerter of 25.4 in front and 28.3 in rear to get it's slight stance. That way IRS suspension is set close to or level to ground/pavement.

Popular Hot Rodding did a multi pages story with pictures on stance in their April 2012 edition. Explains everything and the effects of wheel and tire impacts.
Thanks everyone for the replies. So, let me see if I'm getting the eye for a "nice stance." The first pic in Plastic Pig's post (Silver '63 coupe) is a nice stance. It's not too high like the other ones that look like they're trying to go off-roading or something. But, Sting U2's '64 is an even better stance. Nice, a little lower in the front than the rear, but not as low overall as the Silver '63. That one (the '63) looks a little too low for my taste (it almost looks like the tires could rub). But, maybe that's where the subjectivity comes in. Some might like the Silver '63 better while others like me might like Sting U2s better. How am I doing? About right?
