i've heard of walnut shells through the carb with the engine running, but the favorite was water with a bit of soap for lubrication poured into the carb with the engine running at a couple of thousand rpms..

I've done this before Bill, and it works great. An old mechanic showed me how. You start with a hose on dribble in the carb at idle and gradually increase the rpm and water at the same time until you are at wide open throttle and a large stream of water going in! You should see the black smoke from all the carbon that spews out the tail pipe, it's amazing.
Steam cleaning from the inside.
They used to have a bolt on water injection kits you could buy. If I remember right it was to run more timing without detonation or for tow vehicles to help them run cooler and not detonate.

GM put out a service bulletin/directive (whatever) back in the 50's I think for the dealers using water through the carburetor as an accepted method for cleaning the carbon deposits out of cylinders. I've seen copies of the old service bulletin using this procedure.
I've used Sea Foam in much the same way, it did a great job on my Cushman Scooters.
I've mentioned using water for over 50 years to guys to clean carbon off the top of the piston and valves , even cleans the spark plugs like new , but 99% of the people I tell are afraid to try it thinking I'm crazy .OH well!
I do it once a year on my 55
