Bolted my (ebay new) engine mounts to my chassis today (originals had been cut and modified .... God knows why) and my initial thought is that each arm should face the other ..... perpendicular to the chassis rail ... but they don't. When I put a straight edge against the rear side of each of the arms, the right faces forward about a 1/2 inch and the left about a 1/4 inch. So should I try and bend these until they face each other with no gap when the straight edge is applied OR (leaning this way) is it acceptable to pack out (with washers where the mounts bolt to the rail to correct this alignment issue .... I assume this is what they did in the factory assembly line. Last option is to do nothing but I don't think the top engine mount or rubbers would like it.
Okay, I'm already crazy ..... but I'll do my best to ignore ..... at least until I refit the engine .... if then okay (engine mount holes line up nicely with frame mount holes).... I'll ignore .... but it will still be apparent .... that I am crazy!
Thanks 1955Copper .... looks like shims may be on the menu. I do remember that the old rubbers were pretty flogged out ... thought this was only age related but may have also been alignment/distortion related .... even though these are different mounts, I see minimising distortion is important for mount life.
Anybody know why they specify the engine mount carriage bolt inserted from the bottom with the nut on top? I've always installed mine from the top so that if somehow the nut did manage to work itself off, at least the bolt will remain in place. Is is so that it is immediately evident if the nut comes off?
