I am considering on buying an IDIDIT column rather then hacking 2.5inches off of my original column.
I have talked to IDIDIT and the spline is the same length as the original so hacking it would not be an issue. The IDIDIT comes in a tilt wheel too. Is the Tilt wheel column any longer then the standard column?
The 2.5 inches I hack off the bottom does not make the column shorter because the Steering pump takes that space. So the column that appears in the car, is still the same length. So is a standard column vs a Tilt column the same length?
The reason I ask is because I cannot have any more column in the car. I am at a perfect length with a standard column.
try to get a collapsible column from Ididit like they make for 67's, you can ask if they can make 1 for you , then you would just have to collapse the column the right amount to install the longer steering box, I take it you are installing the Borgeson unit Dennis? I cut mine but there is not a lot of spline left so that would be a better option. While you are at it you may as well get the 4 way flasher option too. Remember 67 steering wheel fitments are different than 66 down so they would have to make you the correct one for the '63 unless you are changing steering wheels.

Thanks in advance for any help.
The stock column is 1.5" in diameter if my memory is correct. Ididit and Flaming River both have Corvette specific columns. If you got a shorter column from them, which they make, unless it was a special order for a Corvette, the diameter would be too large for stock mounting brackets etc......
And no, the standard column inside the car is shorter on a comparison of tilt to non tilt. Did they do something special for Corvette columns? You need to call customer service to be sure if you can't find the info on their web page.
When you cut the necessary length off the shaft for installation of the Borgeson box you will still have full splined engagement of the rag joint or u-joint (which I highly recommend). Having extra spline above or below that engagement doesn't do anything.

true enough but the OP said he doesn't want to cut the orig. column

I understand that part. What I perhaps don't understand is the reasoning.
If it is because "I don't want to change or modify anything on my original car because it will take away the value I am so concerned about on resale" then don't make the change(s).
When you are installing a different power steering system which requires shortening of the steering column shaft you have the ability to cut/shorten the original shaft as they sell replacement steering column shafts. I had one for replacement of the badly worn shaft on my 63. I turned it into a pry bar when I put the Flaming River column into my car and junked out (sold for parts) the original column.
If someone is going to keep the original steering box after conversion to Borgeson style power steering to include with the vehicle in case of a sale then replace the original column too and install an aftermarket column. That way you keep both original parts and enjoy the upgraded steering you get with the conversion while you have the car.
It's OK to be concerned about modifications just don't drive yourself crazy about it. Do it, enjoy it.
Without reservation, I chopped the required length off my original '65 steering shaft to fit the Borgeson box. Already had power steering but next to my 5spd TKO Keisler, this mod was the best thing I've done to improve driving enjoyment in this car.
Only consideration I had on changing the shaft was finding a collapsable design for safety reasons. Some day I'll prob go with an Ididit or Flaming River design.
The reasoning is simple.
I have the original Carburetor and intake manifold, but I use a Holley 650 Double pumper and performer Intake. I have the original timing covers and valve covers but use chrome ones. I have the original radiator (also got the shroud) and fan but use an electric fan, be cool rad. I have the original steering box, rag joint and steering column...... but use a Borgeson, box, rag joint and ____________ steering column. etc etc. I was going to by just a new steering column shaft, but with an IDIDIT I can get cruise control and 4 way flashers.
