Default Hurst Competition Plus Normal Function

I have a hurst competition plus shifter on a muncie 4spd in my 1960. I have just cleaned and adjusted the rods and installed new bushings and clips. I also properly aligned the neutral position with the vinyl alignment tool and adjusted the rods. The shifter now functions much more smoothly with all the neutral gates lining up properly.

I have one question that I do not know due to unfamiliarity with this shifter. When the shifter is put in the neutral position, it pulls to the right toward the third fourth neutral position. So by default, if you are shifting and not pulling to the left, it will pull itself into the third forth neutral position ready to go straight forward into third or straight back into fourth. It seems as if the shifter is doing this by spring weight as if it were designed or adjusted to do this. (rather than just standing in straight up neutral in the middle of the H position) Is this a normal function of a hurst competition plus shifter to assist the driver to get the car from second to third in a faster motion or is there a problem with a spring adjustment in my shifter. BTW, I am sure the rods are not causing this function. The shifter would do it even if the rods were completely detached.

The shifter handle tends to go to the red dot in the drawing below in lieu of the green dot. Is this by design?

Yes, it is normal. All Comp. Plus shifters are spring loaded to assist in hitting 3rd gear when power shifting.

This is to stop you from shifting into 1st gear after you have revved it up in second and are power shifting.

Mine seems to function that way also - rests in the 3-4 lane while in neutral.

Agree, but it is possible to get 1st and you won't forget it.

You are correct. If you grab the stick hard and slam it you can still hit 1st. I've seen guys do it. I don't hold the stick that tight. I just push it and it will slide into the neutral gate and up to 3rd without much effort.

Yep! Now, when I am at a stop sign I always find 3rd then go to 1st. Someone told me this and it has kept ever since not sure why though I think it is because I do not want to accidently put it into reverse.

Just it shift like cutting butter?

Thanks Guys, Sounds unanimous. I appreciate the advice and info. Yes it does shift very much more smoothly with the new steel bushings and the shifter properly aligned. No trouble finding the shift gates.

I have been working on the car since I got it two months ago. I will be installing my new dual exhaust with off road magnaflow exhaust and crossover in the next week and repairing a brake line and then I will be out burning through the gears!!!!!!!!!!
