My car is a '67. The switch mounts with the little rod attached to the largest part of the eel and on top of the switch and the wires as they come off of the switch, pointing in the direction of the rear. The top attaching wire is red/black, bottom is green black.

Your description of the problem is not clear to me? Are you trying to re-wire the switch or is it a rod/attachment problem? Since the wiring is potted, you might be better off buying a NOS or repro switch if it’s the wiring. This is a pic of an installed ’67 switch.
