One of the few remaining things on the 64 roadster that doesn't work are the backup lights. I havent even checked the bulbs yet but assuming they check out, what are the other common issues ? Where is the switch located on the transmission ? Should they work with the key in the "on" position without the car running ?
on the side of the trany on the cover side there is a switch that is bolted by a bracket held on by two of the cover bolts with a small rod from the reverse lever. that is the backup light switch. the rod might need adjusted or the switch could be bad.
Stupid question but are you sure your car had backup lights?
It was an option in 64.
I know on a manual transmission the switch is on the driver's side of the tranny.
There is a small rod that links the switch to the reverse lever.
The wiring for the switch goes forward up the front of the firewall to meet the connection in the harness.
Backup lights only come on when the ignition switch is in the run position.

No way to prove it came with them, but it has two white and two red lenses while my other '64 has 4 red, so I only assumed it had the option.
Anyhow, turns out I got lucky and it was bulbs, both blown. Replaced them, hit the key and they lit up like new with reverse selected... that was easy !
