In the C3 section there's a carb/distributor loaner program.
I was thinking about all of the special tools that I have in my garage and thought a similar program might be useful for specialty tools. The kinds of things that you know you'll only (hopefully) need once and that you'd borrow if you knew someone to borrow from.
So far we're thinking:
Leakdown Tester
Valve Spring Compressors
pressure gauge with a 6' hose for doing the TV cable setup on a 700r4 tranny
inch pounds torque wrench
piston ring compressor
micrometers, calipers, torque wrenches, feeler gauges, etc
the special tool for tightening the nut on the muncie main shafts
and lest we forget Duct tape and wire coat hangers :D
Frankly this sounds like a great idea on the surface, but lets face it, there are a lot of "Bubbas" out there, and how do we protect the tools from them? The last thing I would want is "Bubba" using a torque wrench to undo all his head bolts, and then using the head of the wrench to wack loose the head, or put the shaft into a intake port to lift the head. Some tools just need protecting!

I can appreciate that. I think trusting people to respect someone else's stuff is a big factor here.
Someone has suggested using Paypal to place "deposits" on the tools to ensure that they're returned in the same condition that they're loaned in. I think it has merit. Sure there are some Bubba's out there, but there are a lot of people who are careful, skilled but simply lacking a tool that's impractical to buy.
By the way, I stopped at the Auto Zone this weekend to get some parts and they are now offering free loaner tools, as long as you buy the parts from them. You do have to put a deposit down, but it seems to be a good program.
