My 396/425 let out two loud squeals upon cold start, only when reving it. No noise after driveaway. Started in neutral, clutch out.
Did not sound like a belt, and the alternator belt is tight. No power steering or brakes, no A/C. Drove it for an hour with no further noise. Never did it before. Is this possibly coming from the trans?

Maybe a pump or alternator starting to seize, causing the belt to slip? Pull the belt and see if they spin freely.
I had a bearing going bad in a near new alternator. It would make a noise on a cold start sometimes but it wasn't a squeal or a squeak. More of a groan. Maybe it was a cross between a squeak and a groan so it was a "grueak".
Wouldn't make any further noise while running but if you'd spin it with the belt off, you could hear a rough sound while the armature was turning.
Last time I used belt dressing (on my 63 Galaxie) I ended up with more noise than I had. But I'll take your various advice & check the alternator, water pump, and de-glaze the belt.
