Another day working on the Vette and another challenge. Just solved the alternator support problem only to find the carb linkage difficulty. The things that seem the easiest somehow get complicated.
The 383 has an air gap intake while the original 327 had the low profile cast iron manifold.
The accelerator metal support that connects with a cotter pin to the carburettor accelerator rod sits too low for the new carb set-up. I bent the rod (which I can always straighten) but it doesn’t solve the problem – it does work but it now touches on top of the air breather and I can accelerate only about 90% .
I am thinking of welding on a small extension which will raise the bar by about an inch and a half so it will connect to the rod higher – then it might interfere with the spark plug wires though. Currently at idle the support curve rests on the block/intake and at idle will probably cause some acceleration..
Can I purchase a accelerator linkage that is more suitable for the high rise intake?
I am in Italy and due to cost of postage and the time it takes to get a part I would prefer to modify the existing piece – any suggestions are welcome.
I also have a Holley on an air gap manifold. Since the manifold was getting in the way, I made a vertical extension to go on the pivot coming out of the firewall. Not sure if my solution would work for you however, since I'm not using a drop-base air cleaner.
you can bend that dogleg piece out straight on the new carb.....use two pair of vise grips and you can do it on the car.....if that doesn't work, you can cut it off with a dremel or hacksaw....

I bent the the shaft to that dogleg position (I took it off the stock carb and 327) - otherwise I had no possibility to accelerate using the pedal.
It seems that I need to go wtih a cable set-up. Can someone post a link for the complete kit? I have found only the bracket.
As a temporary fix I will try to extend the stock arm for better leverage and to clear the intake.
