LOOKING FROM THE BOTTOM UP OF MY DELCO DISTRIBUTOR, I SEE: DIMPLE, PIN, VALLEY.
HERE'S THE QUESTION: DID I REASSEMBLE IT CORRECTLY [I SHIMMED THE END PLAY] - OR - SHOULD I HAVE A RED FACE WHILE I ROTATE THE DRIVE GEAR 180 DEGEES? [NEXT TIME I'LL REMEMBER TO MARK IT]
The dimple should point in the same direction as the rotor tip. If it's 180 out the dist. will be half a tooth off, which will cause misalignment of the rotor tip and tower terminals. Also, on many engines you can't rotate the distributor to get the proper timing without the vacuum can interfering with the manifold of shielding. It's best to shim the end ply to .002" to .007". Otherwise the bouncing shaft can cause high rev point bounce.
Duke
Whatever you do for the rest of your life, don't take any risks or chances...we Corvette nuts couldn't stand to loose someone as knowledgable as you. I learn something new everytime I read one of your responses and appreciate it.
DUKE, I TAKE IT I DO NOT HAVE TO HAVE A RED FACE [ AND I DO NOT HAVE TO ROTATE THE DRIVE GEAR]. AS I RECALL, WHEN THE DIMPLE AND THE VALLEY ARE ON THE SAME SIDE, THE ROTOR POINTS TO THAT SIDE. I FIND THAT IS THE CASE HERE, SO I GUESS I REMEMBERED IT CORRECTLY. IT IS THE SAME ON MY ACCEL DUAL POINT DISTRIBUTOR WHICH DOES NOT HAVE A VACUUM CAN. AS ALWAYS, DUKE, THANKS FOR TAKING THE TIME TO SHARE YOUR KNOWLEGE AND EXPERIENCE. GLAD YOU ARE ACTIVE ON THE BOARD!
