I've just change the transmission gear, brown 18 tooth 3:08, install a new speedometer cable and still it won't read pass 40 mph? what could be the problem?
EASY TO TEST SPEEDO
PUT A VARIABLE SPEED HAND DRILL ON THE END OF THE SPEEDO CABLE [TRANSMISSION END]. RUN THE DRILL BACKWARDS AT VARIOUS SPEEDS AND HAVE SOMEONE TELL YOU HOW THE SEEDO RESPONDS. WITH FAST SPEED, A GOOD SPEEDO OUGHT TO GO WAY ABOVE 40. GOOD LUCK; SOUND LIKE THE SPEEDO.
The speedometer on my 56 was bouncing all over the place. I installed a new cable. Cured the bouncing but now the speedometer won't read over 25MPH. I pulled it out, along with a non-functioning temp gauge and sent them to North Hollywood Speedometer and Clock for repair. Waiting for them to call with an estimate.
Propably the magnets inside the speedo have been weakened over the decades. This affects the needle movement - the magnets just won´t be able to create enough magnetic field to move the needle mechanism. You need to replace these parts. Please consult your local speedo shop for further info.
