yeap, and I went to the back of the car and listened very carefully to see if i got a noise like opening a coke just to make sure I wasn't pulling a vacuum on the tank.

update:
Still not leaning towards distributor: why, was able to pull a cap and get a visible spark when it shut down.
found lots of trash in the tank from when we originally had it coated-this was probably well before we all knew the effects of Ethanol. I recomment just buying a new one, which I did.
so after new pump, new tank, wrapping all fuel lines, changing out rubber line, I am finally at "electric fuel pump"
How I got there, after vehicle shuts down, bowl on carb is empty. Pull fuel lines and turn vehicle over, very little and on occassion no fuel flowing. So venting the vapor lock has no relevance here. The mechanical pump is getting too hot.
I post this so people have something to reference such as myself when looking for problems. Hopefully this is it. if not, I will reply again.

The fuel pump shouldn't "run away" from the fuel. You probably have a restriction somewhere in the steel fuel line between the tank and the pump.
Disconnect the inlet to the pump, remove the fuel tank fill cap and pressurize the tank. You should get a "strong" stream out the supply side to the pump.

i can push air through it with a good stream. I can snake some trimmer line about 3/4 one direction and then about 3/4 the other way and feel the two crossing. With the bends in the line under the battery box and throught the frame at the rear it won't go all the way through and the stiffer the material I use the less it goes in. I can see the fuel line the entire way except in the frame and see no damage to the line. when blowing air or with the trimmer string, no debri comes out.
only when the car is hot does it not push fuel. pulling the line after the pump when hot and turning the car over gives nothing. Let the entire engine cool for about 30 minutes and it's back to pumping. was not able to find any heat build up before the pump but the pump was getting very hot.
also,
forgot to mention for reference, since electric pump requires gravity feed fuel, we just used the original sender card and put holes in the tube right as it enters the tank, removed that top filter and crimped the end. this will give a gravity feed effect because the electric pump will not pull fuel up the current sender card routing.

I like this suggestion, I've had it happen to me. As soon at the engine cuts out, take the gas cap off and listen for air for a vaccum in the gas tank. See if the car starts back up.

already ruled that out.
just took first test run with electric pump. At this time, I don't believe the car has ever run that good. Normally shuts down on my in ~20 minutes of driving and we had the car going for a good 45 minutes with the temperature up the whole time. It's a very muggy day today here in Mississippi, without a breeze in sight. Pops and I did a high five on his way out today because we think we actually got it. again, if not I will up date this and hopefully other people can use the post whether vette or not to help them in a similiar situation.
