Hello. My tach cable bounces up and down. It is particularly noticeable at low RPM, and it makes a noise while doing so. Is it possible to lubricate this cable? If so, how?
I am thinking of disconnecting it from one end and dropping some oil down the shaft. Effective or not?
NO NOT OIL. There is a special speedo cable lube. Syl-Glide is a good one (sold at NAPA). The idea is not to lube the last few inches as it enters the Tach otherwise it won't operate accurately anymore if it gets gummed up. Pilot Dan
I have a simular situation... the speedometer goes tic tic tic and the gage needle jumps 3 too 4 mph @ each tic, would this also be a lube problem?
If the "tic tic" sounds like it's coming from the speedo, it's likely one of the worm gears inside. They wear and can cause needle jump. It might be time to pull the cluster and send the speedo to one of the recommended speedo shops.
My bad, It's not the spedo it is also the tach cable now how do you go about lubing the cable, do I have to remove it?
Yes. Unscrew the end under the dash and pull the end down, then you will be able to pull out the core and clean and lube it. Be sure to check the tip at both ends for squareness. If it looks worn, you can replace just the cable core as I have done many times. Pilot Dan

SylGlyde from NAPA does work fine. Any worn parts you might need to replace from core to cases to ends for tach or speedo can be made at any speedometer shop in your area.
