Sitka is a large Island in Southeast Alaska. S.E. Alaska is also called the pan handle of Alaska the numerous islands span down the west coast of Canada. There is barge service from Washington and a ferry system that transports vehicles and people around Southeast Alaska as well as service North to interior Alaska and South to Prince Rupert Canada and down to Bellingham Washington. My Dad grew up in Sitka, watching it grow from dirt roads to up to 12-14 miles of paved roads, probably considered 12 now, the last couple of miles was in such bad shape that Dad wouldn't drive the Vette on them. Last year at this time I was spending my last month with him, he had been diagnosed with lung cancer about a week earlier and his prognosis was grim to say the least. We watched programs on T.V. he liked, I did chores he was unable to do, like mowing the lawn, cleaning the fence, washing the vehicles, and so on. He wanted to work as long as he could so him and I would go to work out at my parents health food store together every morning. The one thing he loved almost as much as his car and family was that store, and he loved to interact with the customers, but unfortunately the cancer made it difficult for him to talk much without getting into a coughing fits. We talked a lot about the Vette and the one thing he was able to do on the few nice days we had, he would take me out for a cruise, and eventually he gave me the lesson I had always dreamed about and he let me drive her. Like I said he died on July 13th but just two days earlier my older brother came home, my Dad gave me the keys, my first solo run in the car and told me to take everyone for a ride. I took my brother out and showed him the little pointers Dad showed me and we took turns driving Dad's car but after taking my youngest sister for a ride my Dad just couldn't take it anymore and he decided he would take my other sister for her ride. That was probably the best moment right there watching him and my sister take off in the Vette, because by this time we knew it would be his last ride. My Dad had a man cave, the downstairs of their two story house one side was the one car garage, where of course the Vette was parked and the other side a shop with his favorite chair, T.V. work bench and a pile of corvette books, and his computer where he would check his corvette forum nightly. He loved the jokes most of all. If you go on the memorial forum you will find a little thing we wrote using Dad's handle Evergreen titled Forever Young. Evergreen is the name of their store in Sitka. My Dad was a great father, and one of the most honorable person I have ever known, and I think of him everyday. Dad's 1961 Corvette is so much more then a car to me, because that car has been therapy to me, it has kept me connected to my Dad those first days after his passing and it kept me together. I drove the Vette leading the way as we took his body to the funeral home, I drove my mom in his car to his funeral which I can tell you choked me up tremendously seeing all those people there at his funeral. Hearing that the plan if he gets the car to leave it in Sitka means a lot to me. Thank you all for the kind words here, if you are ever find yourself in Skagway Alaska I'm easy to find, all you have to do is go to the police station and ask for me by name, they will know how to get a hold of me

RIP Dad
