I've got a 327/350 67. Recent rebuild but don't think many miles ago. I get a very soft whine when the engine gets fully heated, and then get a bit louder as the heat rises. Have soaped the fan belt and no chnage. No change as revs change. Fan clutch seems good as does water pump.
Any ideas.
Does it make the sound when driving or sitting at idle? Have you checked the bolts for the carb? Can you isolate the sound in a particular area of the engine compartment? Dennis
It's really tough being the first respondent to a potential problem post when not much info is included.
Only does it AFTER the car is up to operating temp. Then it does it when running or at idle. Sounds seems to come more from the front, All vaccuum lines seem good. Have not checked carb bolts or manifold bolts. Does not change pitch with revs. Remains failry constant, although louder after running awhile compared to when I first hear it .
my cousin just recently had an oil pump whining in his fresh rebuilt 427. He said it sounded like a bad power steering pump. Maybe thats were the problem is.
Great idea, thanks, somtimes we can't see the forrest for the trees.
As I was about to take off the fan belt to check the noise but I noticed a stange dark film on the back side (engine side) of the fan blades. Could this be a leaking fluid from the fan clutch?

Does sound like it might be the fan clutch but I would still pull the belt and try to run it briefly w/o it. You might have more than one problem - who knows?
I pulled a leaking radiator out of my GTX yesterday that had dumped about a half gallon of coolant on the garage floor. Decided to pull the water pump too since the pulley base needed to be pressed in a little to better line up the pulleys. Found out it was leaking also.
With the fan belt removed and it still does it you might try spraying carb cleaner around the intake and carb base. If leaking it will rev up. Be careful of moving parts!!!

Update:
Taken all the usefull suggestions and none have solved the problem.
I did then isolate the whine to the carb. I replaced the gasket (to the manifold). Didn't solve it either, but the gaskets (set) that were on there were for a 300hp not the 350. No decernable difference.
Now do I tear down the carb? What to look for? Or just replace everthing (rebuild) and hope?
