half shaft question

Default half shaft question
Can anyone tell me if there is an in and out side of the half shafts? One side is sort of recessed on the extensions for the u-joint. Any help would be appreciated.

The car was completely disassembled by the previos owner back in '79'.
Had too many projects and this one was over taken by a '66' big block.
After a heart attac, he started selling off his projects.
