Door Handle Push Button

The spring behind the door handle push button has broken on my 67. I have been told to replace the spring and seal just turn the rod out of the button. The rod turns freely but does not come out, what is the secret?

There should be a plate that retains the spring to the rod/button. The rod should not have to be removed from the push button.
