Good morning, a recent widow thinks that because I have a c6 that I know all about corvettes. Good thing there is this forum.
She has no keys. Her 59 vette will start by just turning the key slot and the trunk/hatch does not latch.
Does someone/vendor make key sets for a 59?
I can change her tumblers if that is needed.
I hope this C2 forum is as helpfully as the C6 has been to me.
Thanks, Jim
You should call Pats Locks in Fallston, Md. He services most of the Mason Dixon clubs cars. Hes highly regarded and quite reasonable. The widow might even let you drive there to get it serviced.
If you can get the four digit key code off the door lock cylinder, a good locksmith can cut a new key. Without a key, you may not get the ignition switch cylinder out to replace it with lots of drilling.
If you decide to switch the lock set, I have a 60 and 66. I replaced the lock sets in both. I have the old keys which might work in the ignition, or at least work with the paper clip to get the ignition cylinder out.
a hint for you. any GM car from that ear will use the same lock set. if there is any older junk yards around check to see if they got any. if not send yours to Pat in MD (410) 879 9647. if you are dead set on wasting your money buy repros
Just because the car will start without the key in it doesn't make the lock bad.
The old C1s were designed so the key could be removed and the car started (or left running) UNLESS the ignition lock had been turned all the way to the left to the LOCK position.

My '67 does the same thing, and I've always wondered if it was designed that way or is just worn? However, I've owned it since '71, and it's always been that way. Hard for me to believe it was that badly worn at 4 years old......?

Great timing. I was in the process of fixing/replacing my ignition switch, not wanting to take the car anyway since anyone could start it. As soon as I read this it was a quick run to the garage and sure enough - just as it's posted. Thanks FRANKIE the FINK!
