Hello all, I've used this site for all most all my vette needs, except I've generally done more reading than posting. Anyway, I just finished a fresh rebuild of my 65 327 about a month ago and I'm in the final stages before start up. I ended up upgrading my starter to a two post modern starter. All it has is two terminals, one for the hot wire from that battery, and one from the ignition system. I was wondering how to incorporate my original wiring system with this starter? I've looked at the diagrams and I understand what wires do what, I'm just looking for some outside advice.
Upgraded the motor. I got the car non numbers matching; wrong color, wrong heads, wrong carb, etc so I decide to rebuild the motor more to my style vs whatever the previous owner had done to it.
Nothing if you don't mind the extra, unnecessary weight and low torque compared to a lightweight, higher torque starter that draws less energy from the battery that you can get for the cost of rebuilding the factory style starter. I like my lightweight after market high torque starter.
You need to put a diode in the lead that feeds the coil / bypassing the coil resistor when cranking.
You'll have to figure out the proper polarity orientation with a "trouble light" when installing it
Looks like Jeg's makes one (now) - I just bought a general purpose diode and soldered terminals to it and hooked it up at the "top end" - at the coil resistor. Carry a spare diode assy in my ash tray.
Not bad $20 for a $2 diode LOL but for some people it is easier LOL
I'm using a mini-starter so that I could replace it easily if req'd with my large radius mandrel bent 2 1/2" SS pipes
If you don't like the other suggested solutions, you can use an inexpensive 12 volt relay; wire the relay coil between the starter solenoid terminal (purple wire) and ground. One of the relay switched terminals can be connected to the battery wire at the starter, and the pink wire in your factory harness can be connected to the other relay switched terminal. That'll connect your coil directly to the battery wire when the key is in the "START" position.
Alright guys, still having a bit of a problem. I have the diode installed in the correct direction on the black/pink r wire which is connected to the 'ignition' terminal on the starter. With the current set up I have I can't get the engine to crank. I have a powermaster mini starter with only bat and ign terminals. As for the wires on the engine harness I have a purple wire, solid black, solid red, and another black with a possible yellow or green (?) stripe, and of course the black/pink r wire. If anyone can let me know what these wires go to, or anyone who's connect to a mini starter, I'd e extremely thankful. It should also be said I'm using a MSD street fire CD box with a MSD distributor.

You need 12vdc to the starter solenoid to "engage" the starter when you turn the ign. key to "Start".
Its the purple wire from you ignition switch to your stock starter solenoid "S" terminal. So where is the solenoid term "S" on you new "Modern Starter"??

Lol so I'm just being stupid ! The r wire and purple should be on 'Ign'-the black should be a ground, and the solid red should be on the 'bat' terminal?
