Default Heat Riser Valve

Questioning if my heat riser valve is working properly. After the engine warms up in what position should the counter weight on the heat riser be to indicate that the valve is open inside the exhaust? Should it be horizontal or should the **** be in a more downward position for the flap to be open? I am going to drive it see if it changes a little later on. How many of you even have a heat riser valve still on your car? Thanks

Down is open, up is closed. I always cut the flap off the inside so it looks original and the stock exhaust still fits correctly.

I removed it. The car now has EFI.

The counterweight should be in the downward position to show that the valve is open. It opens when the spring gets hot and releases the tension. I would think most cars still have them. Spray some lubrication on the shaft if it's stiff.

Most pipes would require either the valve or a similar spacer in it's place to fit correctly. I gutted mine then tapped the hole in the housing and ran a bolt into it.

Just wire it permanently open with some stainless steel mechanic's wire and forget about it. Did it to mine 5 years ago.

My `64 was running a little hot , discovered the heat riser was
froze half shut. Ordered a 2 1/2 in spacer from Paragon.
problem solved.
