Default 62 frame

First question on this forum: I have a 62 that at some time in the past 40 yrs someone got happy with a cutting torch when they were installing headers. The two front legs of the x-member have small sections of the webbing removed (for additional pipe clearance) where the exhaust is supposed to pass thru. Small areas of the original oval-shaped holes are still there. I would like to weld the steel back into the x-member legs with the original size oval holes. I've searched but can't find dimensions. Does anyone have the info? Also, are there any precautions that need to be taken when welding on these old frames? Thx for the help.

I need the major and minor axis dimensions (lengths) for the oval shaped holes in the front legs of the x-member. If anyone has a frame that they could measure, it would really help. Thanks!

I'll try to get those numbers for you tomorrow. The frames are mild steel, nothing special.

My frame suffers from the same affliction for the same reason! Pretty ugly! Corvette Central sells the complete cross-member. I think you could replace it without removing the body too. Here's a link. http://www.parts123.com/parts123/yb....Z5Z5Z50000050x Part number is 181009.

Thanks for the response. I had thought about that, but since the sections that need replaced are relatively small (about 8" in length), I think I'll try to avoid replacing the entire x-member. I have access to a water jet, so I can get the replacement sections made pretty easily. If that doesn't ultimately work, I can always replace the entire x-member. Thanks again for your response.

Also, just for additional information, the X-member and oval holes for the exhaust pipes is the same for 56-62. They are Probably the same for 53-55, but not having personal experience with 53-55 frames, I would not want to make a definitive statement on those frames.
