Default Removing engine

Looking for suggestions. 427 big block--Can i remove the motor and transmission as one unit or is it best to seperate them prior to pulling motor out. I do have the radiator, fan, and water pump currently removed. There appears to be lots of room in the front but not sure.

Thx dave

Pull them together. Don't forget the shifter should come off. Some guys pull the distributor also. You can get extra room by removing the fan shroud if you have one. Dennis

Take out the Radiator support....it will give you more space....

Make sure you leave the Yoke in, so the trans wont leak on you, the car or garage floor.....

Use grade 8 bolts. If you have a "tilter" just bolt the chains to the rear and front exhaust manifold bolt holes. I don't trust the lift plates that bolt on top of the intake. Dropping a BB makes a terrible sound. If you don't have a tilter, borrow or rent one. It really makes the job a lot easier. Use some string to hold the yoke in. Dennis

For sealing the transmission I used on the these. It works great. Works on the TH350 and the Muncie's.

Dennis,
Yoke? Is this where the drive shaft goes into the tranny. Isn't that a sealed bearing. Can't find a rental for the tilt; is it still possible to push down on the tranny to get the tranny and engine up and out.

No need for a tilter all you need is a piece of chain and the tilter's never work all that well anyway.

Never used a tilter to remove the BB and trans from my car. One man job if you be careful.

As said by others, it can be done without a tilter. At least have a couple of friends over for pizza and beer AFTER the engine pull. The yoke is the exact part sticking out of the tailshaft of the trans. Unbolt the front driveshaft u-joint and separate the two. Dennis

No need to pull the trans unless it needs to come for some reason. I unbolt the bellhousing from the block and just pull the motor.

Pull the rad. and the fan assy. Then hook your eng. hoist how ever you perfer. I use a plate bolted the the carb flange. Hold the motor up with the hoist and unbolt your motor mounts from the block and remove them first. Drop the motor down after mounts are out and that makes unbolting the bellhousing much easier. Support the trans with a jack and pull out the motor.

I do this by myself with no problems. Just dropped a big block in a 69 a few weeks ago.
