Can anybody help with this strange problem? After restoring my '64 coupe, the battery wasn't charging. I had the alternator checked it was OK, but the shop said that the original regulator was bad. They replaced the regulator with a solid state, and it now charges, but my ammeter reads backwards! It shows a discharge to the positive side
of the gage, and vice versa. The regulator plug is on the right terminals. Could it be the new regulator is not right? I hate to get another regulator if that's not the problem. Switching the terminals on the gage does not change anything. It's driving me nuts.
Pull the connector off the back of the gauge and use a AAA battery and jumpers (briefly) across the gauge terminals, then reverse the polarity and do it again; you should get equal needle deflection (in different directions) if the gauge is OK. If not, the gauge needs work.
