I'm trying to identify information about the engine in my 1960 corvette. I've looked at different posts but I'm still confused. So, what is the best interpretation of F0520GF ?
Need to know what the casting number is. All that number tells us is that it's a Flint motor built May 20th. The "GF" means it could be a 1955 265, 1957 283 or a 1965 283 none of which were for a Corvette.
In case you need more information, the casting date is on the top side of the block, just under the distributor and ignition shielding. Should be a letter and two numbers.

Has to be 65 283 in a passener car. 1955 and 1957 engines did not use a leading zero to represent the month of assembly. A 1955 or 1957 engine stamp would be F520GF.

There is a guy over on the parts for sale forum that has a 283 with casting date of E50 that might work for you if you know your assembly date. He doesn't say what is on the deck. Check your VIN to find the approximate build date. The casting on this engine is May 5, 1960.

Thank you all for the great - but disappointing information. Good to know there's such a great resource out there.
And just for clarification, a 1955 engine code would be F55GF, and also have a separate engine sequence number. Good luck on your project, and keep us posted.
