Here is my latest "smart move". I went to go for a drive in my 67 roadster and could not get the key to turn in the ignition. I looked and saw I was trying to start the vet with my '67 chevelle key. Got the right key out but now it also does not turn. Tried the key in the door lock and it works fine so I believe the ignition lock cylinder must be messed up that might or might not be related to the wrong key insertion.
Next step was to pull out the manuals and see that the lock cylinder must be first removed in order to remove lock & to remove lock cylinder you turn key to accessory and insert paperclip in hole by key channel and turn counter clockwise. Problem is key does not turn to accessory position, stuck in on and I did try it from the on position and it will not move without forcing. And as suspected, lock nut will only turn so far then would have to strip/break end of lock to remove it.
Next step will probably call a locksmith but was also told they will probably have to drill out cylinder and I would like to avoid that since all still original locks and keys.
Any thoughts from this group would be appreciated since the weekend is coming up and would rather drive the roadster than the SS396 coupe.

I just did this with a cluster I bought. You can use a VERY large screwdriver under the lock nut and pry around it and pop it off.
It looked like you could get it back together again since it was just held on
by some bent over tabs. So after you get it off maybe the locksmith can straighten it out for you.
It sounds like the key from the SS has pushed one of the lock pins up into position and it got stuck. Try using some WD-40. Maybe you'll get lucky. The pin may loosen and drop back down enough for the original key to work.
Just my .02

Yes, I had this very same problem happen with my 63, and by working some WD-40 into the lock with the long tube attachment and using a small dental pick, I was able to get the lock to function correctly. In fact it now works better than it ever did. Its worth a try.... :smash:
Thanks for the responses, I tried again to get the lock to work additional spraying and picking but it is still stuck. I visitied with a locksmith and he seemed to confirm it was a stuck pin. He will come by tonight and waive his service call fee if I give him a ride after he gets it working. Not a problem with that!!!!
My computer was down and was unable to update my lock problem. It took the locksmith about 5 minutes to get the lock to work. He took a new "A" blank and made a key, squirted some wd-40 in the lock and after several minutes of playing got the key first to move to "on", then to "accessory", stuck the pin in the hole, turned key counterclockwise and removed the whole lock cylinder. He said the lock was fine just dirty. I still have the original stamped keys and the number matches the number stamped on the lock cylinder so I was glad he did not have to drill it out.
FYI, I had several people tell me not to use wd-40 but the lock lubricant with graphite. I asked the locksmith about this and he said not to use the lubricant with graphite since it will "clump" up over time. WD-40 is fine but it is not as good since they changed the aerosal, sprays everywhere.
Thanks for all of your input, now on to the next project.
