I have noticed a vibration in the steering column right at the steering wheel & behind the hub. The column itself is not vibrating. The collar/ turnsignal switch & steering wheel are bouncing as we go over bumps & seem loose. I can grasp the wheel and it will move up & down.
I pulled off the horn button & the screws for the wheel & hub nut are tight.
I can't get back to the car or my AIM until Monday.
Any thoughts are appreciated.........thanks.
If the outer column tube is solid and the shaft (and wheel) move up and down, the upper bearing in the turn signal switch is worn out; all the resto houses have them.
Assuming your car is a mid-year you can, disconnect the battery, remove the hub/wheel, turn signal lever, (67's unscrew flasher ****), should find three phillips screws holding signal mechanism. You can slide the wires up the tube enough to push the signal unit out of the way. Now the tricky part, a small snap ring holds the bearing unit on the shaft, I use a sharp pointed device to catch the lip and pop it up. Be careful to not loose this ring, your bearing unit should come out. If I missed a step or detail, someone add it in. Hope this helps.
Do you need a 'special' wheel puller to remover the steering wheel? My detent on the sig light switch does not work. I assume a new switch is needed???
Not sure what you mean by special. You need a puller that will allow two bolts to pass thru it and screw into the wheel hub. Remove cap it just pulls off, remove the horn mechanism from the wheel 4 screws, remove the wheel from the hub, 6 screws. Locate the two holes in the hub. They will be on a straight line drawn thru the center of the column.
