I want to keep the original AM-FM but I need some top down cruising music. I'm considering mounting a Blaupunkt Las Vegas AM/FM/CD unit with wirelss remote behind the console. Speakers are up in the are but I'm toying with mounting some 4 inch mid range and 3/4 inch tweeters behind the seats, possibly using the hard top side bolts to hold a mountng toward the top of the storage area. Could add a bazooka sub tube in the very back of the well after that. Hmmm...
Anybody wired up a reasonably good C2 system without cutting and hacking???
Looking to keep it reasonably original but even though the fctory radio is working ok I need some real music for cruising.

I have had good luck with a ghetto blaster behind the front seats on several muscle cars. It would be tricky to get good sound in a mid yr.
I am sure it can be done, so the Ghetto blaster is just another option.
(they have come a long way, $200.00 and your there)
Neither is an option in my current vette. It comes with its own stereo.

In my 67 I have a complete stereo w/cd player made into a board wich drops into the starage compartment area. It is self contained with speakers, amp and its own antenna. plugs up with a 4 pin trailer plug so I can remove it at will. this way I can still have the orig working radio and tunes of my choice. built several over the past few years for other mid years, works great and no visible mods...
Did you use a stock board? I toyed with cutting a piece of masonite to fit and I have a new piece of carpet for the cover that I have never used because the original carpet on the board is ok.
Did you mount the speakers in the board? If so how well does the sound carry up to the listener?
Where did you run that power line. It sounds like a good concept.
I was planning to use one of those compact antennas and mount it under the rear deck. What is yours.
I am with 396RAT, JVC ghetto blaster. For around 250.00 bucks I found one that can crank out the tunes, has a remote for volume, tuning etc.
Easy solution plus you can use it for other functions as well.
The "complete mount" idea in the storage cover is a great concept. To take it a step further a guy could get some free standing speakers with the angle suited for the application and use some velcro strips on the bottom to keep them from sliding around on the carpet in the back. Use some quick disconects for the speaker wire. Possibly use some hard mounts up front for the front two speakers under the dash and quick disconects on the wires there as well. Then, when you want to go stock, pull the rear speakers and rap the wire up. Remove the compartment mod and un-plug the front speakers and stow the wire for them. Then the only non-stock item remaining would be the hard mounted dash speakers that would be well out of sight anyway.
I have the speakers mounted in the board, behind each seat. I did not use the stock board, I made it out of particle board w/a 2X4 frame. it actually sits flush with the rear compartment, which gave me extra room to mount antenna, amp, wiring all underneath and out of sight. the speakers and radio are visible, but are black, and the board is carpeted black to match my interior. it can be removed in just a few minutes and stock board installed, but most people have never noticed it even being there.
In my 64 roadster I have the Autosound (Kenwood) in dash setup. It fits in the stock location. I installed their 2 spkr 6X9 in the stock location in the dash. Then I put a 200W Kenwood amp in the pass side tool well. I've got 2 6X9 Sony tri-axial speakers in vented boxes (they're a little wider than standard 6X9 boxes). They fit great behind the top when down. The amp powers the rear spkrs only. Will overpower the side pipes on the freeway. Clean sound and big bass, no need for a sub-woofer IMO. If you want to keep the stock radio in position, just put your new tuner btwn the seats at the vertical board (just in front of the tool well and centered. That way you can still remove your tool cover if you need to.
