Reproduction teak wood vs. standard steering wheel for 66 Vette
I just purchased a used repop teak wood wheel for my 66 and it's a little smaller diameter. Are they supposed to be? Also the "dish" isn't as deep. Shouldn't the teak wood and the simulated wood wheels be physically the same? Thanks in advance for any help...

They do come in a couple sizes with different dish depths so you probably bought a shallow dish smaller wheel without realizing there are differences out there.

Thanks for the input. I guess what I'm really trying to find out is were the factory original teak wood and simulated wood wheels exactly the same diameter and dish in 1966?
Thanks again for your help...

Yes a factory teak wheel would be the same size and all as the plastic wheel

And like Dave said, Eric Freeman is who you want to go to for a wheel as close to original teak as possible. Many here say his are actually better!

If you post up a few pics of it someone here will know exactly who made it, what kind of wood it is, and even when was made! Like the saying goes, a picture speaks a thousand words.

I tried his smaller 15 inch wheel. I had less knee room and it obstructed the gauge view for me.Exchanged for the 16. Love it!
IMHO the whole dash was designed around a 16 inch wheel.

The standard Freeman teak wheel is 16" with a standard dish. We also sell a Freeman 15" wheel that has a shallower dish moving the wheel closer to the dash. Both wheels are $499 inclusive free shipping in the lower 48 states.
Measure the diameter of the wheel to see what one you have.

After side pipes, nothing better than a teak wheel on a C2.

Got a free one ( extra with a car ) years back. Beautiful wood. Can't decide which car to use it with. For now it is a wall hanger. Saw an aftermarket design and it wasn't even close to the original. As the demand increases watch for imported models done to perfection.

If you compare a Eric Freeman wheel to the original that you have you will be hard pressed to tell the difference.

Freeman makes a very nice reproduction but guys who know originals can tell the difference in a few seconds. If you care about originality buy an original and not a knockoff if not buy a Freeman wheel.

I recently switched from the 16" plastic wheel to a 15" black wheel from an early C-3. I'm really happy with the smaller size, and it does not obstruct the view of the speedo as a 14.5" wheel that I tried.
If you want to sell your 15" wheel, and it is a Freeman wheel, I might be interested. PM me.
Thanks.

I gave a friend one of my old plastic wheels to send off to Eric and it came back teak a few weeks later. I guess it's possible he could have cut down the ring or replaced it all together.
