Default Wheel offset / backspace

In the many wheel posts here I see some folks refer to wheel offset. Others backspace. They are one and the same, aren't they ?

Default Re: Wheel offset / backspace (kenmo)

No. Backspace is the distance between the inside face of the wheel and the mounting plane of the wheel. Offset is the distance between the "center" of the wheel as measured by half the distance between the inside and outside face or the wheel or half the width of the bead flanges AND the mounting plane of the wheel.

Offsets typically are in the range of -0.5" and +0.5". Backspace is in the range of half the overall width of the wheel.
