Default XE262 in 327 engine

There has been so much discussion on the forum on the cam choice on 327 engine that I would like to contribute my share and my experiences. I just got my 327 engine with new XE262 hydraulic cam installed and broken in. The cam is absolutely fabulous, it feels very strong from the idle up and pulls nicely to 5500 RPM or so. It also has nice "cam sound"! I can recommend this choice for everyone who is looking for a "driver" cam on 327 engine. Previously I had a 284 degree Crane which was just a bit too aggressive for my taste.

My setup is: 327 .030 over (331), around 9.5 compression, GM camel hump heads with large valves, 2.5" rams horn exhaust manifolds, 1.6 rockers, 4 speed WR, 3.36 rear end.

Funny thing is that I spent a long time considering between XE262 and XE268 cams and decided to go with XE262. You can find interesting dyno sheets from the Comp Cams web pages:
http://www.compcams.com/information/...ts/DynoSheets/

According to Comp Cams, the milder XE262 actually delivers more horsepower in a 356 cu in engine than much advertised XE268. In this case, the smaller cam is better. The web page does not say anything about 327 engines, but the trend is quite probably very similar.

I hope this helps you guys with a 327 engine.

I found the same thing. Note my specs below, fairly similar to yours!!

I forgot to add: also Pertronix & Flamethrower combo. Yeah, looks very familiar...

Remember that the 327 does not take as much cam as the 350 and 383 engines, so you usually want to go "small" if you can restrain yourself.

Just for grins, I plugged your combo into Dyno2000:
289 HP @5000, 362 Torque @2500

Change your exhaust to headers and you might see a nice improvement. The simulator says you might go to:
321 HP @5000, 380 Torque @3500, with a much broader torque curve (360+ from 2,000 to 4,500).

Of course, Dyno2000 is not necessarily accurate...

Thanks for comments.

Yes, I too have DD2000 and find that is somewhat optimistic. I am still going to stick with the rams horns, however nice improvements the simulations show with the headers. One update in order would be aftermarket heads, AFR or Edelbrock or Pro Topline... :D

I think this would be a monster TOURQUE cam for my big/block 427............would probably work great with my 3.08 rear gears,,,,,,,,,, Question whats the red line ? Comp Cams says 1300/5600 Range but did no mention ofredline............

I just had my motor re-built also and I went with XE268 cam (couldn't help myself), I also went with 10.5:1 pistons and 202 fuilie heads. I changed my rear at the same time from 3:08 to 3:55. The car is still a good driver and when I want it to go it goes real good.

I wouldn´t rev much over 6000 RPM. I do not know the recommended red line, but it doesn´t make any sense to overrev it much past the powerband, does it? I guess that with the matching valve springs 6000 would be safe, at least that´s my own red line with my 327...

Don't think you would find much improvement with headers vs 2.5 rams horns...the 2.5s are pretty good flowing manifolds. If you had the 2"s I would swap but many rodders seek out the 2.5s....My 2 cents. EZ sends

EZG...
How do you like the Unilite ?
Is yours a conversion or complete distributor ?
Do you still have both mechanical AND vacuum advance ?

grumpy 55,
Some people have had problems with the unilite...I have the distributer and coil...I also had it on my 69 camaro a while back, but my 68 Camaro I just used the pertronix conversion and coil. I have had no problems with it other than the total dist. advance coming in a little late about 3500. Got a different engine in now, so far so good.....
BTW the 268 is perfect for the 350, think the 262 is at the top end of a 327. I had a 280H magnum 230/230, .480/.480 in my 327 and it was a dog on the bottom end....EZ sends
