I was going to drive my 66 coupe to work this morning. I hooked the battery up and got in. I noticed a crackling noise when I got in. After a few seconds, a small amount of smoke was coming out of the power window switch in the center console. I'm assuming I have a short somewhere. Any ideas where to start looking? Are the switches prone to going bad or do you think it is wiring? Thanks in advance.
It's more than likely the switch. They're very small and the wires going into it are fairly large. It's easy for a soldered wire connection to come loose and touch somewhere. Just pull it out, inspect and clean and resolder, should work.
This can be a real PIA getting the wires to stay on. My 64 did not have soldered wires, but the push on type connectors. I had to fabricate something to push on the post to hold the wires on. I used the circular plastic insulator off a small electrical clip. I'm talking about the plastic that is around the area where you crimp the wire. The fix will depend on what you find when you pull the switch. You may be qualified as a micro surgeon when you are done with this one.
Yep, the wires are easily pulled out when working with the center console. I had a lots of trouble putting the wires back when installing the freshened center console.

Re: Power window problem 66 coupe (bondo478)
Mine never "smoked" but the insulator surrounding the connector underneath the switch was cracked, allowing the terminals to wiggle/woggle and loose contact with the terms. on the switch. Required a new wiring harness "pigtail", which I got from Lectric Limited.
