Default 69 corvette 4 spd key lockout problems

I hope someone can help. 1969 vette, 4 spd., went to turn off engine, put car into reverse and the key switch would not go into the lock position. Engine stopped and key removed, but can restart the car without the key. Replaced the interlock cable and it seems to move about an inch or so. If the lever in the steering column is lifted the key can move to the lock position, but the new cable does not move it all the way to the top. Am I missing something the cable replacement was straight forward. Could the key switch be bad? Any ideas or thoughts would be greatly appreciated as I cannot park the car without someone being by it.
Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the CF. You will get a more accurate repair response by posting in the C-3 area. You are in the C-1/C-2 section. Dennis

Maybe you need to adjust the backdrive linkage rod?

No rod on a '69 - just the cable system. If the OP is still with us, check out page 7-13 in the 1969 Chassis Service Manual for the cable adjustment.

I guess the Corvettes used a cable instead of a rod?

Some/(allpass cars?) used a linkage rod.

Yup - pass. cars used rods and a bellcrank to feed back to the steering column lever, Corvette only used a flexible cable arrangement.
