Default Documentation??

Gentleman, I am new to the forum and new to Corvettes in general. I am in the market for a 65,66, or 67 and have been researching what I can about these cars with all the appropriate books from NCRS, which I did join. Also was able to put some of it into practice at spring Carlisle and have seen a few cars after that. My questions concern documentation and if I am interpreting things correctly. Now I know anything can be "faked", car, trim tag, POP, bill of sale, etc. but for this discussion lets assume all are original and have been verified by the experts. So here it goes. Seems to me that we use documentation for a couple of different things depending on the documentation. For example, an original bill of sale or window sticker would confirm if that particular corvette came with that specific drivetrain but not if it is the original drivetrain. It would also confirm what factory options came with the car. A POP would confirm what the original drivetrain was on the car, but again will not confirm if its the original drivetrain and can not confirm factory options. For 67 a tank sticker will do the same as a bill of sale or window sticker in that it will confirm what specific drivetrain and options came with the car but not confirm if its the original drivetrain. I know this is only a piece of the puzzle I'm just trying to make sure I understand this piece of it. I thank you all in advance.

I think he's got the gist of it but remember there is no vin number on a tank sheet so it's hard to tie it to a car

Hi Eric, You're correct. All the documentation in the world only shows how the car was originally built. In order to determine if the original drive train is present, an examination of the engine stamp pad & casting number & date, the trans. stamping and dates as well as the rear end casting and stamping dates need to be made. After looking at several hundred examples of originals and re-stamps you should be able to tell the difference between them. Good luck in your search.

Jim

The best accepted resource is if the present owner has had the car checked out by Al G

Thanks Jim, figured I would bother some of the other forum members. As for the "hundreds". I've got a loooooong way to go.

Nowhere Man, understood no vin # on Tank Sticker. If I remember correctly from Nolan Adams book and a couple of threads about it on here the job # should fall within 500 +\- 6 of the last 3 of the vin # ? I understand its not the actual vin # and that tank stickers can/are faked also. Thanks.

But unless you can prove the job number is the same one from the car and not redone to help some ones cause You can try to do the math to see if it matches the vin

The NCRS document validation service can validate (or not) a tank sticker to a particular vehicle VIN by comparing it to the documents in the records contained in the Shipping Report. They don’t disclose the data that confirms it, it’s either validated or not.
