Default Leaking steering box

My steering box is leaking, all of a sudden I might add, maybe two tablespoons full, dripped onto the frame, to the splash shield and on the ground. The seal on these known to leak? Car was fully restored, I imagine but cannot confirm box was rebuilt. fix it or just add oil now and again?

Steering box takes/uses 'grease' not oil...

if its oil, look for another source/area for the leak...

Hmmm. Wet under box, on frame below box, trickled down to splash shield. At first I thought it was residual from when I dropped the filter last fall, figured maybe I spilled some on the shield that wind & time helped make its way to the ground.

Maybe someone put gear oil in it instead? Looks like gear oil, I run Brad Penn green, so it isn't engine oil.

Sometimes grease will break down and an oily mix will separate out and if the seal is worn, leak out. My tie rods and ball joints have exhibited this oily leakage in the past and I've always used a high quality lube in them. However, for no more miles than I drive it I don't typically lube it every year.

I believe this happened to my steering box years ago when I topped off the grease in it. Several months later I had oil seeping out the bottom of it and I sent the box to BAIRS to be rebuilt.

I had the same problem. I think the fact that the box sits very close to the 500 degree exhaust manifolds might help thin out the grease a little. Anyway......I had box rebuilt, and no more leaks.
