Default Soft top frame adjustment

Just got this GREAT 62 Corvette. Not a number matching, but great driver and in real good shape. Paint has a few flaws, but I think I will just enjoy the car for awhile before I do anything.

But the soft top frame is an issue. Mainly the top horizontal member above the side windows. There is an downward "V" that will not allow the window to roll completely up. I have read ST-12 manual, made adjustment after adjustment, but no improvement.

Does anyone have any solutions to this problem.

This is very hard to get out without removing the rag from the frame. I'll try to explain the adjustment. The outboard arms are for adjusting the fore/aft, and up/down, to the back of the glass. First, you'll want to loosen all 8 bolts (they should be 3/8" carriage bolts, and the nuts/threads should be between the brackets). Push up at the center break/split, above the window with your hand to hold it straight, and align the back of the window glass (which should be up), to get good spacing and alignment.
The inboard adjustment is the critical one. This is called an "articulating" arm, and if you look at how it works, there is a bellcrank assembly on the center top of the siderails that gets pulled "up" by the inboard arm when you open the top. Open the door, and latch the front of the top. Push up hard where the split is, and tighten the inboard brackets. Now put the top down in the well to make sure that it will fold up correctly. If it binds, carefully loosen the top bolt of the inside bracket, and push down on the top. Now tighten the top bolt. Raise the top and see if the "v" is gone. If not, you can try one of my tricks. Instead of latching the front bow, place a small block of 2 X 4 on the windshield header. You can hold it there with some duct tape. While holding the front bow down on the 2 X 4, loosen the inboard bolts on both sides, hold the center straight, and retighten. Now fold it down and adjust as necessary. A 1/4" adjustment on the attenuating arms will make a huge difference on how the top opens and closes. Don't force anything. Hope this helps you.

BTW, if you can't push the center upward with the inboard carriage bolts loose, then the rag is on the frame wrong. Too tight.

Mike I will try your suggested techniques on my top which is ill-fitting, thanks for posting. I also saw your comments on another post where guy needed to adjust height. I have determined that to some extent my doors are slightly high at that rear flat behind the window where it slides under the rubber seal, which seems to be causing a bit of issue with getting top to close (its very tight) and other things. Anyway, enough to keep a guy busy tweaking for a while that is for sure. Curious, if you recommend setting height with the front latched so that fore/aft adjustment is correct? I have ordered the assembly manual, sorry if this is covered in that it has not come yet.

Hi, this is a great post. I only just got my 61 and having the same issues with the downward V on the side windows. I read Mike Coletta's comments but I can't visualise what is meant by "Inbound" and "Outbound" arm on the Soft Top. Does someone have a picture?

There are four "arms" supporting the frame to the car. It's inBOARD and outBOARD.

BTW, this post is from 2013. You should start another thread with your questions.

Thanks for the clarification. Now I understand how it all hangs together with the movement up and down. Soft top now sits a lot better. Can you tell me how the header row adjustment comes into play? Will it help with moving the sidebar centre break up further.
