My speedo was working fine, went for a drive the other day and notice on my way home it stop working. Nothing, no reading. it was making noise a while back but it went away with the warm weather. I pulled the cable off the speedometer and pulled the inner cable out about 3 ft and saw no problems. I drove it with it connected in the trans and disconnected at the dash and the red plastic end was turning. So reaching out for advice on what else could be the issue.
The red plastic end that goes into the speedometer is square but looks like it is twisted. Not sure if this is normal or not.
By “twisted,” do you mean the corners are rounded off?
Midyear speedometers are notoriously problematic. There could have been enough resistance in the speedo head to strip (round) the plastic tip. You could try a new cable and see what happens but if the speedo head hasn’t been touched in 30-40 years, I suspect it’s your problem.
There are a number of things in the speedo head that can go bad from gears to trip odometer. Unfortunately, repairs are probably best left to one of the many speedo repair shops.
I just had the exact thing happen last week-end in my 60. Driving along and hear this nasty noise and then the speedo quit working. I put it up on the lift, disconnected the cable at the trans. and it was hard to turn. Disconnected it at the speedo and now it's easy to turn but the plastic tip is twisted all to he11. Tried to turn the speedo. input and it won't move. I'll drive it this summer without the speedo. but it's time to have it fixed. Fortunately, we have a speedo shop in town so it won't have to be shipped out. I suspect you'll have to do the same.
Thanks, I think i will try replacing the cable first, can you buy just the inner cable or if I buy a replacement cable jack and inner cable can i slide the inner cable out and put into my exsisting cable jacket?
I think it is much easer than fighting with the fire wall.

You can replace just the inner cable. It has to come out from the speedo. end. Simply pull out your old one and use it as a guide to cut the universal one to the correct length and then install the end onto the cable. You might as well buy 2 of them because the first one will be ruined when you try it out because your problem is not the cable. Something in your speedo. broke and jammed it up. That's why the plastic end is all twisted.
