On a 66 corvette 327/350hp what would be the timing set at 8 or 10 or maybe or none of the above?
Thank you
The factory recommended setting is 10 BTDC with vacuum can disconnected and hose plugged AND idle low enough so that there is no centrifugal advance. This low idle RPM (about 500 RPM) is hard to achieve with the 350 HP engine....but it can be done long enough to set the initial advance. Another way is to use a rubber band to hold the distributor weights in and not let them swing out during the INITIAL ADVANCE setting process. Then remove the rubber band after setting the initial advance.
That being said, 6-8 degrees INITIAL ADVANCE is probably more "engine friendly" with today's 93 octane gas. I typically set my 1967 327/350 HP INITIAL ADVANCE AT 6 BTDC. I bump it up to 10 BTDC when I run a mix of 93 octane and Sunoco Racing Gas.
The VACUUM ADVANCE adds around 16 degrees advance when connected and engine is at idle.
Total INITIAL and CENTRIFUGAL advance (no VACUUM) should be 38-40 degrees. With the factory distributor this is not achieved until around 5000 RPM engine speed.
