Now for a lengthy comment....... :yesnod:
The subject of researching past ownership on these cars has come up here bazillions of times (at least 10, anyway), but you should have a response. Since I have been down this road with my '66, I'll shed a little light ("little" being the driving term here). It is almost impossible. Period. Most, if not all state DMVs do not carry records beyond about 1980, give or take a few years. In addition, recent privacy laws and regulations limit what you may get from DMVs, although as I found out, that also varies from state to state.
That being said, you need to begin with the last owner. If you purchased from a dealer, see if you can get any information from the dealership as to where they purchased it. They may or may not be cooperative. :(
If you have even an inkling as to a state in which the car may have been registered, contact that DMV directly. Many have online webpages that can be accessed through the main state website. Each WILL require you to submit form (s) and a fee. IF you hit the state where the vehicle was registered within the last 10-20 years, you may get a previous owners name and plate number at the time of registration....you may or may not get an address. It is tedious, frustrating, and usually, deadend research. In my case, I purchased my '66 in Arizona with no documentation other than the car had been in Wisconsin previously. Wisconsin DMV was EXTREMELY helpful and sent me all information, including the three owners in that state, their names and addresses, and even correspondance on file. I then contacted those owners, or attempted to, and got additional information and data from two of the three. I found that the car had come to WI from New Mexico through a Hemmings ad in 1987. The car had a rust-free frame when I purchased it, so I knew it hadn't been on the road much in Wisconsin (it had about 1000 miles put on in 13 years!). I contacted NM DMV, and they would only send me the name, date of registration, and plate (vanity plate in this case)....no address or additonal stuff. The car had been first registered in that state in 1981. That is where my trail ended. Using the internet, I managed to track down the father of that NM owner. He was in west Texas, but his son, now living in Las Vegas, would never return calls or mail. I suspected the car may have been in Texas for a bit, so I sent proper forms and fee to the Texas DMV, but struck out. I also placed a free ad (if you are a member) in the NCRS Driveline with a million or so other souls looking for the past. So, that is how I got to 1981 from point zero. That only leaves about 16 years.........
I am certain if you need DMV information for a specific state, there are plenty of folks on the C2 Forum who will provide this to you. Just begin a new thread with the request.
Good luck, and

PS: If you find a state where the car lived previously, you might also contact the NCRS chapter or chapters in that state.....many times long-time NCRS guys know or know of a lot of these cars in their areas or state. Just another set of leads. I checked the NM NCRS, but still whiffed.
