Just changed my oil and filter on my '67 L71 and when I started engine, oil poured out from filter. Redrained and refilled but same result even though I tightened filter housing as hard as I could.
This is my first oil change and I did put the new gasket in.
It wasn't leaking before I removed it. The old gasket was there and I removed it. I placed the new gasket on top of the filter housing and pushed it up against the engine as hard as I could and tightened the bolt. Where did I go wrong? A 20 minute job is now an all day job and still not done.

You can't install the gasket by placing it on top of the filter housing. It will not seat into the block. You need to seat the gasket into the block first. I usually put a couple of blotches of vaseline on the top of the gasket and seat it up into the block. Carefully tighten the housing up against the gasket. You will get the hang of it. It only took me 42 years

That usually results in the square-section O-ring seal getting mis-located when you push the canister up. You should install the seal directly into its groove in the block first, making sure it's properly seated, THEN install the canister and filter assembly, and it doesn't take much torque on the center bolt for a dry installation.
