Default 66 - Help Determine Correct Harmonic Balancer

Okay,

I am in the process of rebuilding my original 1966 327/300 (May 6th build). I need to determine if the harmonic balancer on the engine is original/correct. Mine is pressed on and has a "step" on it. I have no reason to believe it would have been changed. The motor had not been out of the car prior.

The NCRS TIM and JG (most current edition) states that all 300 horse cars had a harmonic balancer with a "step". However, I have been told that is incorrect and it shouldn't have one. I have also learned that there were at least two harmonic balancers used during the model run - an early one with a step and a late without (same as '67).

I have seen 66 cars with the step and some without.

If you have a 1966 with the original 300 horse engine, would you please respond and help me determine which is correct. And, if there was a change over date, when did it most likely happen. Let me know if yours has a step or not and vin (or approximate build date).

Thanks

My car is mid-July build date. I replaced what I believe to be the original OEM balancer during engine rebuild a couple years ago with this NOS unit. It was the same form, fit, function and number as the existing balancer that I discarded at that time. Several pics follow.

Hi Boyan,

I'm going to Ed's house tomorrow to look at his '66 before heading up to the meeting.

Thanks,
