I have successfully removed all the body mount bolts (actually they came off fairly easily) except for the cargo driver side body mount. I got the bolt to loosen but I knew I was in trouble when the bolt kept turning but wasn't backing out. I am pretty sure the issue is that the holder housing over the square nut had come loose allowing the nut to spin.
I started taking off the deck lid hinge/spring mechanism so I could get to the top of the body mount but I am finding it impossible to get the top inner bolt. I have tried everything but I can't seem to get a socket/ratchet, etc. on it. Any advice?

Been there, done that many times. The top bolt has a square head held in to place by a square sheet metal cage, the cage has broken loose allowing the whole thing to spin. It is a pretty easy fix but not fun... get under the car at the rear of the wheelwell and use a cutoff wheel to slice off the bolt between the body mount from the frame mount.
you also have to slice through the rubber bushings to get to that ody ba mount bolt. Have you ever lived trough a smokey burnourt
I was hoping to avoid cutting my way out of this and I need to remove the decklid hinges. What about that bolt? I know I have fat fingers but the angle and location is ridiculous. I often wonder how did they put it in in the first place.
Had to cut mine from under. Also removed hinge bracket/spring. Blasted hinges and replaced springs. Mine had some rust. Also bought tool for replacing springs and it was a big help. Will replace all spacers and bolts when I lift body off chassis.
Are you having trouble with the upper hinge bolts, it isn't really clear. If so, lay on your back, you can use a ratchet with 3" extension and/or a gearwrench to get them out.

yeah, that is what i believe he is saying, other posters are thinking it is the caged nut for the mount, no big deal
get out your 1/4" socket stuff and climb in the cargo area with a "headlight",,takes some cussing but you can do it, i firmly believe it was the one joke the factory did on purpose!.....what a bitch.....

It is the upper bolts specifically the inner one. I already spent 1 hour cursing it. I guess this will continue until one of us quits
I am assuming that once I have the hinge assembly out I will be able to access the body mount cage.

Yes you will. I just removed the cages and probably not replace the cages when I remove body. Water seemed to collect there at one time rusting it up a great deal. The upper outer bolts are difficult to remove but can be done with the right combination of socket and extensions. You will have to go more by feel then sight. It's hard to get your body in the right position but take your time and you will get them out. Replace the springs if they look weak from rust and weld up any rusted areas on the hinge. Prime and paint.
'64 Convertible. I had the same problem. I cut the rubber mount and removed it (pretty easy) and cut the bolt. I DO have this same issue with the bolt in the LH door sill, behind the rocker panel. It came part way loose then the bolt started turning due to a rust issue. I see no way to cut this one. It's the last bolt to remove. Anyone have any advise before I lose it and take a BFH to the side of the body?
Thanks.
I tried that before I posted. I actually put 2 screwdrivers, one on either side and held them while someone turned the bolt. It just kept spinning. That plate / nut inside must be pretty rotted. I'm thinking I may have to cut out the box and re-weld it, but I don't weld so I'm looking for a better way. Thanks for the help.
I think I remember from years ago that someone took a dremel tool with the fiber cut off wheels attached. They reached into the pocket and basically made cuts across the top of the bolt head, turning it for each cut - until it was eventually reduced to a headless stud. Then they just lifted the body off over the stud.

that is exactly how i did it and was really no big deal, those little dremel fiber cutoff wheels are a great tool. sliced up the rusted nut in no time...

Cage is not welded in, it is held in place with aluminum rivets.
I had to cut the head off the one in my 65 convertible with a grinder. Remove wheel and cut away. you can grind the rivets off for the cage with a small die grinder. I never reinstalled the cage, i simply put the bolt back in place and had someone hold a wrench on the nut while i tightened the bolt.
I got it out. I was able to take a Dremel and cut the head off the bolt. Just enough room to get the cutting wheel in the hole of the sill and cut. I never saw the rivets because of dirt and grease. I'll pop it off later and replace the bolt, then rivet it back on. Thanks again for the help.
